Don't give up. I believe in you all. A person's a person, no matter how small.
-Dr. Seuss, Horton Hears a Who
Today I began reading my second week's share of reading and stumbled upon a quote that truly made me think about everything we are doing now quite differently. Judith and Neil Morgan included in their biography, Dr. Seuss & Mr. Geisel, that the great Dr. Seuss went into the cartoon business "...with no degree, no job and no prospects"(57). This quote forced me to stop reading and really think about all of this. I know for a fact the overwhelming majority of us in English 2 Honors are moving forward each year with a set plan of what to accomplish even if it is just having classes that push us to college readiness. I for one have been thinking of all the things I need to be successful in life to my own standards. I'm not sure what I would do if I didn't have even a partial plan at this point. Seuss did go to college though; he just didn't get a degree at that point. The fact that he believed in himself that much is amazing, but at the same time it must have been terrifying. Now I'm not saying we should all banish our thoughts of college, but it was just interesting to see that his plan changed into something he probably wouldn't have even seen coming. All of this got me thinking about that question we've all heard: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Can you see your plan changing?
On a side note, I really do recommend this book to anyone who was thinking of reading a biography because it is really good from what I've read of it. Again I haven't started on any reading stategies, but I'm going to try and focus some time over the weekend to getting this all together.
Thanks for reading,
Jenn
